Key Features and Benefits of the Orthoscan TAU 2020

Feature

Benefit

Feature

20cm x 20cm CMOS Flat Panel Detector, 2k x 2k Resolution
The largest detector in the Orthoscan mini C-arm lineup. The full 20cm x 20cm field of view captures anatomy at 2k x 2k resolution with 99-micron pixel spacing and a 42.5-micron focal spot.

Benefit

The Largest Field and Highest Resolution in Any Orthoscan Mini C-Arm
Larger joints, full-foot anatomy, and bilateral structures fit in a single exposure without repositioning. 2k x 2k resolution provides finer detail at the full detector size than any other Orthoscan model, supporting confident surgical decision-making across the widest range of extremity anatomy.

Feature

Stepless 4-Leaf 2-Axis Collimator
A continuously adjustable 4-leaf collimator with independent control on two axes, allowing the beam to be shaped to any field size and geometry rather than switching between fixed preset sizes.

Benefit

Precise Beam Control for Any Anatomy Without Preset Limitations
Surgeons and techs adjust collimation continuously to match the exact anatomy being imaged, reducing scatter radiation to surrounding tissue and improving image contrast. Fixed collimators limit beam shaping to preset sizes; the stepless design on the TAU 2020 removes that constraint.

Feature

Pulsed Fluoroscopy at Five Dose Rates
Continuous, 30, 15, 7.5, and 2 pulses per second. The same five-rate pulse system found on the TAU 1515, now paired with the 20cm x 20cm detector.

Benefit

Dose Reduction Across the Full 20cm Field
Pulsed fluoroscopy reduces radiation exposure without changing imaging workflow. At the TAU 2020’s larger detector size, lower pulse rates carry an even greater relative impact on cumulative dose across longer cases and multi-view sequences.

Feature

27-Inch OrthoTouch 2.0 Touchscreen, 1920 x 1080
The largest monitor in the Orthoscan mini C-arm lineup. OrthoTouch 2.0 interface with customizable imaging presets, on-screen measurements, and HDMI output on a 27-inch display.

Benefit

The Clearest Image Review at the Point of Care
A larger screen means more on-screen image real estate for the primary live window and dual reference images. Customizable presets allow each surgeon or procedure type to have a saved starting point, reducing setup time and technique variability between users.

Feature

Pediatric Dose Filter and Customizable Presets
Built-in pediatric dose filter with full pediatric workflow support, paired with customizable imaging presets for both adult and pediatric protocols.

Benefit

Consistent Technique Across All Patient Populations and Users
Save pediatric and adult protocols as named presets so each case starts from a validated technique rather than a manual setup. Pediatric cases get the filter applied automatically when the preset is selected, reducing the chance of protocol errors under time pressure.

Feature

UPS Battery Backup
Integrated uninterruptible power supply keeps the system operating through brief power interruptions without data loss or imaging disruption.

Benefit

No Lost Cases or Unsaved Images During Power Events
Power fluctuations during a surgical case do not interrupt imaging or result in lost images. The UPS provides enough runtime to complete the current sequence, save all images, and initiate a controlled shutdown if power is not restored.

Feature

Three-Way Brake, 160-Degree Orbital, Wireless Foot Switch, Bilateral Controls
Lock, release, and directional braking, 160 degrees of orbital rotation with 430-degree pivot, a multifunction wireless foot switch, and bilateral sterile field controls with surgical LED lights.

Benefit

Complete OR Workflow Integration on the Most Advanced Orthoscan Platform
Every positioning, lighting, and imaging control is accessible without leaving the sterile field or involving additional staff. The directional brake keeps the unit on heading through hallways and tight corners during transport, and the bilateral controls give the surgical team independent imaging access from either side.

Orthoscan TAU 2020 Mini C-Arm Walkthrough

Hosted by: Christopher Bacon, Founder of Orthoscan and President of Minicarm.com

Hi, I'm Christopher Bacon, co-founder of Orthoscan and president of Minicarm.com. Today we're going to do an overview of the Orthoscan TAU 2020.

Powering On
To turn it on, the green button is in the back. Give it a push. While it boots up, we're going to take a look at the articulation of the C-arm.

C-Arm Articulation
Let's do the orbital rotation first. Here's the minimum height. Here's the maximum height. And we'll also do some wig-wag.

Home Screen
It takes about a minute for it to boot up. When it does, you come to this screen. You have four options: you can schedule your cases, you can hit the recall button, you can add your patient information, and you can also start imaging from here.

Entering the Imaging Screen
Just give the fluoro button a tap. You'll get into the imaging screen. You can see our hand phantom comes up with a beautiful image. One note: don't tap the button. See how nice this image is. When you start tapping, it gets dark, it gets grainy, and it's not the best image you can get. So just be patient. Hold the button in for about two seconds and you'll get a great-looking image.

Bilateral Tube Head Controls
The Orthoscan TAU 2020 has bilateral tube head controls:

  • This controls your mode. It changes you from 30 frames per second to 15, 7.5, 2, continuous, and back to 30. Usually you run it at 30 frames per second.
  • This is your sterile field lights.
  • This changes you into cine mode, which records like a video.
  • This saves the image.
  • These buttons are the technique control up and down.
  • This button puts you back into auto.
  • Here's your X-ray button.
  • This rotates your image counterclockwise and clockwise.
  • This lets you go through the images that you've already taken.
  • This tags your image. You can thumb through a couple of others and tag or untag them.

Touchscreen Controls
Now that we're in the imaging screen, we can use the touchscreen. We can zoom in, navigate around, and double-tap to get back. We can also rotate and double-tap to get back. Up here is your fluoro time and silence alarm. If you reach five minutes or more, you can hit this button to silence the alarm. This is your aluminum filter. This shows you that you're in adult mode. There are three different pediatric modes.

On-Screen Controls

  • Technique up and down, with a button to put it back into auto
  • Save that image
  • Print that image
  • This puts you into cine mode, which is a recording
  • This is your negate button
  • This tags left or right
  • This is your edge: high, off, and low
  • This is your frames per second: 15, 7.5, 2, continuous mode, or 30 frames per second
  • This is your motion compensation
  • This allows you to put an angle on the screen and change the angle. Tap it again to get rid of it.
  • This is your brightness control, set to automatic
  • This is your collimator. You can change the collimation, take an image, and come out of it.
  • This is your mag mode and small field button. To go back to full field, just hit the button again.

Case Review
On the other side is your case review button. You can choose your cases by selecting or deselecting them. You can send them to DICOM, print them, and save them to the hard drive. Here's your select all and unselect button.

Patient Information
Here's your patient information button. Put in the first name, last name, and patient ID. You can also choose the anatomy you'd like to image. Right now it's in adult mode. You can also put it into pediatric modes. There are three different sizes.

Settings and Help
This shows you what all the icons mean on the screen. Just tap anywhere to get out of it. This is your settings screen.

Returning to the Home Screen
This is your home screen button. You'll get a popup if you haven't saved all the images. If you've saved everything you needed, press OK and you go back to the home screen.

From the Home Screen

  • Press the scheduled cases button to add a patient, fill out all the information, and press save.
  • Select a patient and go right into the imaging screen.
  • Press the recall button to review cases you've previously done. You can select one, print images, send them to DICOM, search by patient info, start a new case from a previous case, edit patient information, or delete cases.
  • Press case review to show the case images in the case.
  • Press the patient info button to enter patient information, choose your anatomy, choose the size of your patient, and hit save.

Powering Off
Once you're finished, to shut it off, just press the green button in the back. It's just a momentary switch. Please make sure the machine is fully off before you unplug it.

The Minicarm.com Difference

Minicarm.com is owned by an Orthoscan co-founder with hands-on TAU 2020 experience from initial deployment through multi-year service programs. The stepless collimator and 2k x 2k detector are systems we calibrate and certify in-house.

Common Questions About the Orthoscan TAU 2020

Yes. The TAU 2020 is the highest-specification current-generation Orthoscan surgical extremity mini C-arm and remains in active production. OEM parts, software updates, and manufacturer support are available. Minicarm.com sells certified-refurbished TAU 2020 units and provides independent service contracts for practices that prefer third-party coverage.
Both are current-generation Orthoscan platforms with pulsed fluoroscopy, OrthoTouch 2.0, UPS battery backup, and the same orbital mechanics. The TAU 2020 steps up in three areas: a 20cm x 20cm detector (vs 15cm x 15cm) at 2k x 2k resolution (vs 1.5k x 1.5k), a 27-inch monitor (vs 24-inch), and a stepless 4-leaf collimator (vs fixed). For programs that routinely image larger anatomy, need the highest available resolution, or want stepless collimation control, the TAU 2020 is the stronger fit. For programs where the 15cm square detector covers all case types, the TAU 1515 is the lower-cost alternative with equivalent dose-reduction capability.
A collimator shapes the X-ray beam before it reaches the patient, limiting radiation to the area being imaged and reducing scatter to surrounding tissue. Fixed collimators switch between a small number of preset beam sizes. The TAU 2020's stepless 4-leaf collimator has four independent leaves that can be adjusted continuously and asymmetrically on two axes, allowing the beam to be shaped to match the exact anatomy rather than the nearest preset size. For irregular or asymmetric anatomy, stepless collimation reduces unnecessary radiation exposure and can improve image contrast by reducing scatter within the field.
Certified-refurbished Orthoscan TAU 2020 systems from Minicarm.com typically range from $68,000 to $80,000, depending on year of manufacture, hours of use, included accessories, and warranty tier. Call (800) 643-2998 or request a quote for current availability and exact pricing.
The TAU 2020's 20cm x 20cm detector field covers the full adult foot, ankle, wrist, or forearm in a single exposure without repositioning. For reference, the 20cm field is approximately 7.9 inches square at full size, narrowing to 10.2cm x 10.2cm when fully collimated. Larger joints such as the knee may require repositioning for full coverage at surgical magnification, but the TAU 2020 captures more anatomy per exposure than any other Orthoscan mini C-arm. For exact coverage on a specific anatomy type, contact us and we can walk through field-of-view expectations before purchase.
